Start of Studies
Starting your doctoral studies is the first formal step on your PhD journey. At this stage, it is important not only to complete the necessary administrative requirements but also to establish the basic framework for cooperation with your supervisor and to gain an overview of how the study process works. Below you will find key information and contacts to help you smoothly begin your doctoral studies at VŠE.
Enrolment in the Programme
Enrolment in doctoral study programmes takes place according to the instructions of the individual faculty dean’s offices.
Doctoral studies usually begin at the start of the winter semester or summer semester, depending on when the programme officially starts, or at another date determined by the faculty management.
If any information provided in your application or during enrolment changes during your studies (for example contact details), PhD candidates are required to inform the doctoral studies coordinator at their faculty without delay.

Application for the Doctoral Scholarship
Full-time doctoral candidates may apply for a doctoral scholarship after enrolment.
The application form can be found in the Contact Centre. To receive the scholarship, students must also enter their bank account number in InSIS. Without submitting the application and providing the account number, the scholarship cannot be paid.
Individual Study Plan (ISP)
At the beginning of your studies, you and your supervisor should discuss the content of your Individual Study Plan (ISP). This includes selecting appropriate courses based on your research focus, defining expected publications and target journals, and identifying suitable conferences.
Together with your supervisor, these elements are then recorded in InSIS as part of your ISP. The student subsequently approves the ISP, confirming their agreement with its fulfilment.
Course Registration
Unlike bachelor’s or master’s students, PhD candidates do not register for courses themselves.
After discussing with your supervisor which courses you will take and in which semester, you must complete the Course Registration Form (or use another procedure communicated by the doctoral studies coordinator) and submit the list of courses to be registered for the upcoming semester.
Student Card / ISIC Card
All students are required to obtain an identification card.
The student card is used for:
- access to VŠE buildings
- identification on campus
- access to computer labs
- library services
- payments in the university canteen
The card must be ordered through InSIS and then collected at the collection desk on the ground floor of the Italská building.

Adaptation Plan and Doctoral Onboarding
To support a smooth start to doctoral studies, an adaptation plan for new doctoral candidates will be introduced at VŠE in May. This plan will serve as a practical guide for the first months of study.
We recommend that every new PhD candidate go through the adaptation plan together with their supervisor. The plan helps to:
- clarify mutual expectations between the PhD candidate and the supervisor and establish communication from the very beginning,
- navigate study requirements and key milestones,
- create a realistic timeline for the first year of study,
- learn about available support and development opportunities at both faculty and university level.
The adaptation plan is part of a broader doctoral onboarding system designed to support a smooth entry into the academic environment and establish strong foundations for successful doctoral studies.
Don’t Miss the PhD Welcome Day!
Every September, the Doctoral Hub organizes PhD Welcome Day for newly enrolled PhD candidates.
During this event you will receive essential introductory information about doctoral studies, learn about your study requirements, what is expected from you, and how to prepare for the next steps.
You will also be introduced to the various forms of support available and meet colleagues and staff members who can help you during your studies. It is also a great opportunity to get to know your fellow doctoral candidates.
This way, you start your PhD with clarity, confidence, and the reassurance that you are not alone on this journey.
